Welcome to Poop in the Woods
Welcome to Poop In The Woods, a blog about hiking, backpacking, exploring the outside world, and yes, sometimes about pooping in the woods.
There's a running joke among thruhikers that they are often asked the exact same series of questions by every non-hiker they meet. Beyond some basic factual info (length of the trail, time it takes to finish, etc.), when faced with the thought of living outdoors, people become very curious about how their basic comforts may be met. They want to know where they would sleep and what they would eat. And invariably, and with some trepidation, they land on the question of where to poop when you're living in the woods.
On my thruhike in 2009 I got to experience this line of questions first hand, multiple times. If you've never had the opportunity to have a complete stranger ask you where you poop, I highly recommend it. And it makes sense. It is, after all, a universal subject. As they say, we all do it. And while most people have toilets and bathrooms available 24/7, that's not the case for a hiker miles from civilization. We do it in the woods, in privies, and sometimes even end up carrying it out with us to dispose of later.
A quick Google search on the topic brings up numerous articles written by a wide variety of sources, including many prominent publications. So it's in the spirit of all those inquiries that I decided to start this website. The question of where to poop in the woods should be the least of anyone's concerns when faced with the prospect of spending time in the great outdoors. I hope that the content found here will help to dispel an lingering apprehension that might create a barrier between someone and exploring the outside world.
I sincerely hope you enjoy what's to come and please feel free to follow us on your social media of choice, leave us some feedback, or even offer up suggestions for content or contribute some yourself.
